About Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park – Tanzania’s Little Serengeti
Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and rewarding safari destinations. Established in 1964, the park covers 3,230 km² (1,250 sq. miles) and forms part of a vast ecosystem that links Nyerere National Park with the biodiverse Eastern Arc Mountains. Together, these protected areas support an incredible network of rivers, floodplains, woodlands, and forests that sustain an abundance of wildlife.
Often referred to as “Tanzania’s Little Serengeti,” Mikumi National Park is renowned for its expansive Mkata Floodplain, which closely resembles the iconic plains of the Serengeti. The open grasslands provide exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year, making Mikumi one of the best parks in Tanzania for first-time safari visitors and day trips from Dar es Salaam.
Wildlife
Mikumi is famous for its excellent game viewing, with wildlife often visible from the main safari tracks. Visitors regularly encounter:

The park is also home to several less commonly seen species, including greater kudu, sable antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, and, on occasion, African wild dogs and cheetahs. Bird enthusiasts can enjoy sightings of more than 400 bird species, making Mikumi an excellent destination for birdwatching as well.
