Guests enjoying game drives and the animals in Mikumi National Park

Please Note: Day Trips are a kind of rush tours

Day trip involves driving from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park and back in the same day, with the high traffic in Dar es Salaam it takes up to 6 hours of driving to get to the park and start viewing the wildlife. That means the time spend for seeing the animals is about 4 hours only which of course will not be enough to cover most parts of the area, only selected parts with high possibilities of sighting different wildlife will be covered so that the driver is able to balance the time to drive back to Dar es Salaam and that you do not get back late at night. That being said a day trip will be most suited to those people who are absolutely in need of day trips, those who have only a single day to go for tour. We recommend that if there are possibilities of spending a night within the park or doing a trip of more than one day then it is highly advised not to do a day trip.

Instead of a day trips you have the option to do the following tour options (there is only slight increase in the price to cover your accommodation and meals – the vehicle costs and park entry fees are the same for both day and 2 days trips).

  • You can leave early in the morning to get to the park, do game drives the first day stay over night within the park (Check Accommodation Options here) then continue game drive in the second day till the time you entered the park.
  • Or you can leave Dar-Es-Salaam the evening of Friday or Saturday (or any day of your choice) drive to the park and spend a night there and the next day will have full day game drives (up to 8 hours of game drives) then drive back to Dar-Es-Salaam)
  • Or see our sample itineraries for longer tours ranging from 2 to 3 days.

With these safari choices you are sure of enjoying your trip by spending more time viewing the animals.

Mikumi Day Trips

Even a single day would be enough to enjoy the wilderness. Whether you are in Dar es Salaam or Morogoro town it is possible to go for a day trip - leave in the morning and come back in the same day to be able to continue with any other timetable you may have. This type of trip is suitable for everyone who has very limited time in Dar-es-Salaam or Morogoro town.

About Mikumi National Park

Mikumi abuts the northern border of Africa's biggest game reserve - the Selous, and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar Es Salaam and Iringa. It is thus the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometer track of African wilderness that stretches east almost as far as the Indian ocean. Its size is 3,230 sq km and it is the fourth largest in Tanzania. It is 283 km (175 Miles) west of Dar Es Salaam.

Activities in this closest protected area from Dar es Salaam and Morogoro town involves wildlife viewing, camping tours, walking and night safaris – our favored tour is the wildlife experience on  full day drives. Expect to see animals such as Lions, Buffalos, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Zebras, Impalas, Warthogs, elephants, hippos, more than 300 bird species and various plant species.
